Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) is a white, powder-like substance resembling laundry detergent, commonly used in traditional batik making and fabric dyeing. It helps create the alkaline conditions needed for certain dyes to bond effectively with fabric, improving colour fixation and retention.

In traditional batik making, Soda Ash is also used during the wax removal process. After the batik fabric has been treated with Sodium Silicate, rinsed, and dried, a small amount of Soda Ash is added to boiling water to help remove the batik wax from the fabric.
